“The head of Medusa”

In Greek Mythology Medusa (Μέδουσα: "guardian, protectress") was a monster, a Gorgon, generally described as having the face of a hideous human female with living venomous snakes in place of hair. Gazing directly into her eyes would turn onlookers to stone. Most sources describe her as the daughter of Phorcys and Ceto.

According to one version she was a beautiful priestess of Athena, Poseidon raped her disguised as a horse in the holy sanctuary of Athena. The goddess, furious with the fact, could not come into conflict with Poseidon and so broke out on Medusa. She transformed her into hateful monster that had snakes for hair. The ugliness was such that whoever looked at her face turned to stone.

Medusa was beheaded by the hero Perseus, who thereafter used her head, which retained its ability to turn onlookers to stone, as a weapon until he gave it to the goddess Athena to place on her shield. In classical antiquity the image of the head of Medusa appeared in the evil-averting device known as the “Gorgoneion”.

Meaning: A phrase used for something disgusting or something nobody can stand looking to.

Η κεφαλή της Μέδουσας

Η Μέδουσα στην ελληνική μυθολογία αναφέρεται ως μία από τις τρεις Γοργόνες. Από τις τρεις αυτές αδελφές η Μέδουσα ήταν η θνητή. Το άλλο της όνομα ήταν Γοργώ, που σημαίνει άγρια ματιά. Kόρη του Φόρκυ ή Φορκέα και της Κητούς, αδελφή των Γοργόνων Σθενώ και Ευρυάλη, και των Γραιών Δεινώ, Ενυώ και Πεφρηδώ, ήταν στην αρχή Κενταύρισσα.

Κατά μια εκδοχή ήταν μια πανέμορφη ιέρεια της Αθηνάς που ο Ποσειδώνας την βίασε μεταμορφωμένος σε άλογο στον ιερό χώρο της Αθηνάς. Η θεά, εξοργισμένη με το γεγονός, δεν μπορούσε να έρθει σε ρήξη με τον Ποσειδώνα και έτσι ξέσπασε πάνω στη Μέδουσα. Την μεταμόρφωσε σε απεχθές τέρας, που αντί για μαλλιά είχε φίδια. Η ασχήμια της ήταν τέτοια, που όποιος την κοιτούσε στο πρόσωπο πέτρωνε.

Τελικά τη σκότωσε ο Περσέας, με την βοήθεια της Αθηνάς. Το κεφάλι της, το περίφημο «Γοργόνειο», το παρέλαβε η θεά από τον ήρωα και το επέθεσε στην ασπίδα της, επειδή το κεφάλι της, ακόμη και νεκρό, πέτρωνε όποιον το κοίταζε.

Σημασία: Λέγεται για ό,τι είναι αποκρουστικό, για ό,τι δεν αντέχει να το βλέπει κανείς.
